After becoming a Permanent Resident, the next step is applying for your Canadian citizenship as soon as you meet the requirements.
To be eligible for Canadian citizenship, the applicant must be a Canadian permanent resident and have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years before the application for citizenship is submitted.
Citizens of Canada have the right to vote in the federal, provincial and municipal elections and hold jobs in both the public or private sectors that require a high-level security clearance
Note that there are exceptions to reduce this time requirement if the permanent resident previously held a Canadian work permit prior to obtaining permanent residency status. We can determine if you are eligible to apply for citizenship up to a year earlier than the current standard.
Applicants who are 18 to 54 years of age are required to take an English or French test. The minimum language requirement is the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 4 in all skills. They must also have a good understanding of Canada’s history, values, institutions and symbols, and pass a citizenship test.
Those who committed a crime in or outside Canada may not be eligible to become a Canadian citizen for a period of time.
